History

Founded in early 1960, the local lending library was meant to serve the budding town of Orangeburg. Its facilities in a former train depot however, were not condusive to the library's needs, so in 1972 the library relocated to Prel Plaza. The relocation also included the ambitious proposal of creating a new central library to serve all of Orangetown, a plan that fell through and led to the evication from Prel Plaza in 1973.

After being reconstituted, the Orangeburg Library was relocated to a portion of the old Greenbush School where it still resides. It was completely renovated and modernized in 1998. Since the renovation, the Library has been recognized as a warm, user-friendly place with a renaissance in library services. Orangeburg Library has excellent collections of fiction, biography, magazine and audiovisual materials. The Orangeburg Library celebrated 50 years of service to the Orangetown community in 2010!
